Funerals

I'm hard at work on the second Jack Nightingale book (might be called Midnight, might be called Nightmare) and as always the research is more interesting than the writing. I'm trying to find out how to summon devils, and I'm looking at funerals too. Just got a list of the ten most popular pop songs played at funerals. Well over half of the funerals in the UK now feature pop music as the last song played and a lot of the clergy aren't happy about it!

Anyway, here's the list, in reverse order:

10 "Unforgettable" Nat King Cole
09 "You'll Never Walk Alone" Gerry & The Pacemakers
08 "I Will Always Love You" Whitney Houston
07 "My Heart Will Go On" Celine Dion
06 "You Raise Me Up" Westlife/Boyzone/Josh Grobin
05 "Over The Rainbow" Eva Cassidy
04 "Angels" Robbie Williams
03 "Time To Say Goodbye" Sarah Brightman/Andrea Bocelli
02 "Wind Beneath My Wings" Bette Midler/Celine Dion
01 "My Way" Frank Sinatra/Shirley Bassey

I lost my father two years ago. He spent most of his life in the Royal Navy. So predictably it was Rod Stewarts I an sailing. Having said that, the rest of us chose another song which we put on his CD of photo's ( its a thing these days)we set a photo montage of his life to Dido's " I want to thank you for the best days of my life" kind of fitting, my Dad was responsible for some of my happier times.

What about Fairport Convention "Meet on the ledge" the version with Sandy Denny and Ian Mathews. It will be played at mine!

My Dad wants the Andre Bocelli song but I want William Blake's Jerusalem sung very loud at mine. Can I just say that when you're dead who cares about your choice of music-only those still alive as they want to have something which pertains to the dead persons' life.

At my Father's funeral, the final song came on as Dad's coffin was about to be carried out of the church. The song we selected was, "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston. The church was full to the brim and I doubt if there was a dry eye in the place. My Dad was such a loving and caring man, he deserved that song. It was the least we could do to pay our respects. Every time I hear "I Will Always Love You" memories of my Father automatically come flooding back. Music can be a powerful emotional trigger and should never be underestimated.

You were suggesting these songs for funeral. Hmmm... really can't choose any. For me, these are a bit modern for me and my family.
