I'm planning to put up a free short story on Smashwords - the first of my Inspector Zhang stories. Inspector Zhang is a detective in SIngapore who loves mysteries but they are few and far between in the low-crime city state. He finally gets his wish when a dead body is found in a locked hotel room.
I have asked Stuart Bache, who does many of my covers for Hodder and Stoughton, to come up with the cover and he's given me two great ideas to think about.

Hallo Stephen,
Not an easy decision.
In terms of "mystery" the first one might fit best...
In terms of a scary nightly crime scene the 2nd one might do...
The second image definitely has a greater impact, for me at least...
I agree that the second one has a greater impact. Nice!
Hi Stephen.
They're both good, I think the first just wins over for me. On the sky-line scene, something to do with the distance between the viewer and the city gives it a feel of......errr distance.
I feel that the first one makes you feel that you are right into the thick of the story, it's all just behind the door.
Hi Stephen,
I'm drawn more towards the look of the second image - although both look good! :-)
Have just downloaded Inspector Zhang story onto my Kindle from Smash Words so I'm looking forward to reading it.
I know the hardback of 'Fair Game' is due for release in July - any idea when it might be released for Kindle?
I think at the same time, Bonnie. That's what Hodder tell me!
That would be great! I was just curious as it's not showing on Amazon as being available in Kindle for pre-order yet.
